Abstract

The repurposing of electric vehicle batteries for stationary solar energy storage represents a sustainable pathway to extend battery life while supporting renewable energy integration. This study investigates the thermal behaviour of a second-life lithium-ion battery module intended for photovoltaic energy storage applications. A three-dimensional numerical model combined with computational fluid dynamics simulations was developed to analyse temperature distribution, heat generation, and thermal uniformity under representative operating scenarios. Several thermal management configurations were evaluated to determine their effectiveness in maintaining safe operating temperatures. The results indicate that appropriate thermal control strategies substantially improve temperature uniformity and reduce thermal gradients.
